Orienteering Event 16th May 2010

Report and Results

Oganiser's/Planner's comments.

Another good turnout with about 60 competitors of all ages and abilities running (or walking) individually, in pairs or in family groups. The participants ranged from experienced orienteers who travelled from as far as Edinburgh, Inverness and Kingussie to local families wanting to try orienteering for the first time.

The Blue (hardest) course was won by elite ex-British team member Ewan McCarthy in a time of 39mins with local non-orienteer Jamie Kean coming second in a creditable 56mins. It was good to see Ewan talking to and encouraging the newcomers to orienteering.

All the courses except yellow used a new area of the Balmacara map taking in a lovely woodland stretch toward Kyle and the higher open terrain above with magnificent views across Loch Alsh. The weather for the most part was fine and the odd heavy shower didn't seem to damp anyone's enthusiasm. All the winning times were good considering the roughness of the terrain and it was surprising how quickly family groups (some with baby carriers) completed the orange course. Nobody was out for an inordinately long time thankfully so it would appear that the courses suited competitors capabilities. Truly orienteering is a Sport-for-all.

My thanks to all the helpers who made the day so successful.

The next event will be the Purple Thistle in August organised by Nopesport. Before that it is hoped to hold a training event run by Hilary Quick (SOA) on 4th or 25th July to help improve skills. A few have already registered interest. Please contact tim@sowood.org.uk if you are interested.
